yeah it's frustrating that a series that could be interesting (seriously, the metaphor for the theme is a really great one and the world could be expanded on so much outside of military aspects) is just. not at all. and drops the ball so often.
and yeah it's the same in the manga, but possibly worse. the training episodes actually happen in between Eren being taken in by the survey corps and his trial, which is so stupid because you're watching this OMG HORRIFIC BATTLE and at the same time like "wait whos connie. should i know them." the only character they stress importance of is jean, really. the reveal of the antagonists as reiner/bertoldt and annie is also kinda ham-handed since the three of them are barely in it, and suddenly about 3 chapters before they're revealed they're EVERYWHERE. it gives the feeling of isayama realizing "wait WAIT THEY WERE HERE OK I SWEAR" and it's kinda embarrassing.
