WOW YOU... worded all the beef I have with the series much more eloquently than I ever could.
It's a shame really because I do feel like it has huge potential but it drops the ball far too much. Which is a shame because even the animation has that sort of going, as the scenes of them going around the city with the 3D Maneuver gear are gorgeous and well done, but then everything else is really poorly paced, which is both a problem probably stemming from adapting the manga (which admittedly I have not read) but also poor planning on the animation team's part. I'm not saying they should've done filler, but they have plenty of time to fill out so as to not catch up with the comic and have the giant "WHAT DO WE DO" that 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist gets criticized for.
And idk in general I feel like introducing so many characters who often look alike isn't very good storytelling, because when people would die off, I had no idea who they were (especially Marco, when he died I was trying to remember who he was....).
